How to Choose the Right American Flag Size for Your Flagpole

Selecting the correct American flag size is important for both
appearance and performance.

A general rule is that the height of the flag should be about one fifth of the height of the flagpole. Kind in mind that larger flag sizes will also reduce the wind load capacity of the flagpole.

For example, a 20 foot flagpole typically flies a 3' x 5' or 4' x 6' flag.

Another factor that is often overlooked when determining the proper flag size, is a flags material. While nylon is perfect for general flag display due to its light weight, vivid colors, and water shedding ability, polyester tends to be more durable in windy environments. The major disadvantage of Polyester is its weight. Not only is it heavier than nylon when dry, polyester absorbs water, increasing the flags weight and adding additional stress to the flagpole.

Lastly, how many flags will be flown on a single flagpole should be considered when choosing a flag size. Just as the larger flag size of the American flag can reduce wind loads, so can the number of flags being flown on a flagpole.

Using a flag that is too large, too heavy, or too many flags can create excessive wind resistance and place strain on the pole and hardware. Choosing the correct size helps
your flag fly properly and last longer. If you have any questions regarding flag size or number of flags that can be flown on a flagpole, please contact customer service.
